The Fleming Construction Group’s 2023 Year in Review

2023 – Another Year of Rapid Growth

For the Fleming Construction Group, 2023 was a year of momentum, of positioning, of diversification and of expansion. We spent the year building our internal systems and infrastructure to meet current and future growth, we completed several impressive projects, and we added a number of players to our skilled and dynamic team.

In 2020, when we began our corporate growth initiative, we had twenty-one employees working on projects almost exclusively in Oklahoma and surrounding states. Now, just three years later, our team has more than quadrupled to ninety members, and we have offices in Arizona and Atlanta. 2023 was another year of sustainable growth, careful planning and project success, and we look forward to continuing this trajectory in 2024.

2023 marked the completion of FSE’s work on the 418K square foot CMC AZ2 Mini Mill in Mesa, Arizona. The mill, which will produce rebar and merchant bar, is designed for efficiency, with its arc furnaces connected directly to renewable energy resources. Annually, the mill is projected to emit 60% fewer emissions and consume just 20% of the energy used by other comparable steel-making facilities. This project was by far the largest of six that FSE completed in 2023, and among the single largest orders ever in the history of Butler Manufacturing.

In addition to some great projects, FSE invested heavily in building the teams and systems that will support future growth. With the addition of some incredibly talented people and the pending implementation of a new ERP system, FSE is operationally strong in both project management and field operations.

Fleming Construction

On the turnkey side, Fleming Construction was a 2023 recipient of the ABC Excellence in Construction Award in the Industrial $5-$15M category for its work building the Net-Zero Exploration Center at AAON’s global headquarters in Tulsa. At 28,000 square feet, the multi-story facility includes 10K square feet of showroom space where customers can see, test and explore AAON’s world class systems through a range of exhibits that highlight their product’s features and benefits. The building also features 10K square feet of office space accented with full curtainwall glazing, 7K square foot assembly area, a conference area and lobby.

2023 was also an important year for diversifying Fleming Construction’s project pipeline. We adapted and adjusted to changing market conditions and secured new projects and new clients for a healthy backlog in 2024.  A perfect example of this agility is the 258k square foot industrial facility in Surprise, AZ for BlueScope Properties Group. The shell is now complete, and we are currently completing interior work for the tenant, TriColor Auto.

Rainwater Construction Company

In Atlanta, Rainwater Construction had a stellar year for growth, adding to their team, maintaining long standing relationships and positioning themselves to better serve the influx of industry moving into their region. Highlights include completing and starting several projects for the Georgia Ports Authority, maintaining countless square footage of big box roofing for Span Construction and their client, Costco, and finishing the new 40K square foot Swift Atlanta building. This new construction is the eighth project they have completed with Swift over a business relationship that has spanned more than thirty years.

Fleming 8760

Our maintenance and efficiency arm, Fleming 8760 continued to deliver best-in-class assistance to a substantial roster of ongoing clients. In addition to the completion of regular asset management protocols, 8760 completed a significant storm drainage project for Port City Metals that included a 42K square foot re-roof and 18K square foot existing roof retrofit. The project included installation of a custom metal-over-metal retrofit system and a custom single ply membrane internal gutter system.
